Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a designation or certification program?

The CFE Certified Financial Educator® is a Registered Designation awarded to individual practitioners who have knowledge in the field of Financial Services and who have experience in teaching or instructing adult learners on a formal or informal basis. The designation was registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office, July 2005.  The Institute allows designees to use the CFEd® as a shortened version for business cards and stationery purposes.

Who awards the designation?

The Heartland Institute of Financial Education, a national 501 (c) (3) non-profit financial literacy organization whose home office is in Aurora, Colorado.

Why should a broker/dealer or Financial Services Company sponsor the CFEd®?

Recognition that the need for financial literacy is a motivating force for Federal Government initiatives, employer-sponsored educational programs and individual learning efforts, the CFEd® designation was designed to be a professional designation that recognizes the achievement of knowledge on a conceptual basis along with the ability to impart that knowledge in a practical setting. Financial professionals wish to be viewed as educators, not solely as product and services providers. The CFEd® designation reinforces the competence and effectiveness it’s holders exhibit in teaching others to solve their financial problems.

A short overview?

The CFEd® study program is comprised of 16 units. Included are: Life Planning, Understanding Adult Learners, Insurance, Investment Essentials, Retirement Plans, Debt Management, Tax Planning and Estate Planning. Emphasis is placed on techniques useful in educating adult learners in all subject areas. Applicants for the CFEd® designation must successfully complete a 160 question proctored exam designed to prove their competency in understanding these areas.

How would this program help our organization?

Holding the CFEd® designation distinguishes the practitioner, in the view of clients, as someone who has attained an advanced level of knowledge in their field. This separation creates a market niche for the practitioner who now has the opportunity to offer financial education from a knowledgeable, experienced basis with the practical skills of teaching others.

What does this program offer that existing company-sponsored programs do not?

Educational orientation and balanced information delivery helps both the company and Financial Professionals to be seen as financial literacy resources for their clients. The CFEd® is now recognized as someone who not only understands the financial services arena, but one who understands the importance of educating their clients.

Who is the Certificate holder?

The individual practitioner is the Certificate holder. The CFEd® provides recognition that both current and future clients are working with someone who understands the financial services landscape.

What are the requirements/prerequisites?

  • Three years experience in the financial services arena.
  • Experience, formal or informal, instructing or teaching adults.
  • A strict review of disciplinary actions from any insurance regulatory departments and the NASD
